Girton United A 5- 2 Mepal sports res.

A great result after 3 weeks off sees the Girton lads consolidate their 2nd spot for the time being. Fortress 10 Acre lived up to its name as the boys saw off a Mepal side who were always going to be challenging for a strong position in the table.

The Girton squad were without ruggedly handsome midfielder Jonny Shevlane, due to the build up of rust on his trusty bionic left peg. Also, returning star of the Isleham win Judith Smith, was enjoying a pampering day at the local spa, courtesy of Malcolm who was quoted in saying: “You would look a right little stunner if you got your hair and nails done Judy!” Lastly, the McNulty duo’s absence was noted. Rumours soon sprang up that it was due to Celtic’s poor performance causing a major vein on anger-stricken Liam’s temple to burst, after his trademark temper was unleashed. None-the-less, the youth team began the game with a choice 11-strong squad.

Our 3rd encounter of the season saw another great game of football being played. A tight 1st half display from both sides meant there was still all to play for after the break. Girton opened the scoring through Hussanie, who weaved a tantalising path through the Mepal backline, before calmly despatching the ball past the diving keeper into the bottom corner from outside the box. He celebrated in his typically enigmatic manner by smiling serenely and beckoning his team mates to join him in a silent salute to his prowess. Mepal found themselves a foothold with 15 minutes to go in the first half, after winning a free kick for handball near the touchline on the left of Knighty’s goal. The delivery was good but Girton failed to deal with it and an impressive leap and finish from a lofty Mepal player saw the ball in the top corner of the net. The rest of the half passed without incident, save for Mcgeoghegan’s cheeky goosing of Ron, resulting in a wayward spurt of magic from the end of his wand. Half time 1-1.

Buggs senior’s rallying cries during the team talk were mostly incoherent after his night out on the lash with Mikey Shevlane- father of notorious wordsmith Jonny Shevlane. But the message was clear: a decent first half performance, but with work to do especially with finding the second phase ball. The lads went back out into the heat with one thing on their minds- victory (Buggs junior was considering which pork-based product he would set upon and devour after the game). Veteran Chappo’s constant winging about snapped ligaments and jelly tendons was ignored, and he limped defiantly out onto the field like Mcgeoghegan after a night riding captain Ron’s broomstick.

The sturdy first half performance was the perfect platform to build upon, with the Jaffa Gaffa emphasising the need for us to exploit the width of the pitch with our youthful legs and to wear down the tiring Mepal squad. The girton boys began to play the football they are more suited to, aided by the large pitch and firm surface, passing the ball well and retaining possession. Mepal looked tired and stretched in attacking positions posing no real threat to the back four who had a very strong game. This was due in no small part to the blossoming relationship between the (civil) partnership of Mcgeoghegan and Weasly. Girton also needed to look sharper in the final third, after an average start to the half. The breakthrough was made as Porkey Buggs found space just inside the Mepal half, and started to slowly gain momentum. With the promise of a scotch egg per goal his gluttony overflowed into his performance, resulting in him taking the ball on alone and shooting powerfully with his left foot. The keeper was only able to parry the ball upwards, and there was enough behind the ball to carry it squirming into the corner of the goal. 2-1

Danny Pattern and Msena “cheese” Fondo, began to flex their midfield muscles (especially handsome young Pattern who frequently checked his hair using the mirror stored in Msena’s dread-fro). They were picking up the second phase play and shifting the ball to the wings, finding the gaps which were becoming more frequent as fatigue set in. A long ball from Knighty who was kicking well from hand, forced a defender into an awkward header back to his keeper. But Buggs pounced upon it, attacking the bouncing ball aggressively, stealing the ball from right under the keeper’s nose and rounding him for an easy finish. 3-1

The fourth came again from Hussanie, who had been working extremely hard and enjoying an excellent performance, as he pressurised a Mepal defender who was shepherding the ball to the oncoming keeper. He managed to slip through and again the keeper saw the ball nicked from in front of him as Hussanie rounded him and finished with unbelievable tekkers. 4-1

The youth team’s final goal came from Phil Wright who was playing a good game on the right wing. A great ball from Laurie at the back saw Phil knock it on and past the keeper who was obviously intimidated by Phil’s mighty stature (not perturbed by the earlier declaration from Knighty that he was “small” in the changing rooms). He finished well to bring the Girton tally up to five. 5-1

Mepal pulled a goal back after admirably applying good pressure to the Girton defence. The goal stemmed unluckily from a Troy Sparkes deflection, as Knighty moved across his goal to cover the initial shot, but the contact on the ball moved it into the opposite corner leaving the “chubby” keeper stranded. 5-2

Another good performance especially after such a long break for the lads. With promotion beckoning we enter a must-win run of games full of confidence after beating a strong and well organised Mepal team. A clash against strong opposition Willingham is scheduled for Wednesday and we hope we can keep this good run of form going.
