Saturday 21st February. Call it what you like this, was a real kick in the knackers for everyone involved in Girton United. 3 weeks of snow, rain, wind and generally miserable conditions, Saturday was a glorious day, even the sun came out to play! The build-up to this game was intense, knowing a victory against second placed Foxton would draw Girton United into contention for that all important second spot.

The home team won the toss, and Frostie elected to go with the sun at their backs. 15 minutes in and Foxton were asking the questions, had Girton Utd froze on the big day? Was the pressure too much? Two words were shouted from the home teams youngest player “look motivated”. This was to ignite what was 30 minutes of exhilarating football of gargantuan proportions. Now it was playtime! The first real opening came with a lob from Jimmy Hall. The ball just coming down the wrong side of the crossbar, it was unusual to see him miss. The midfield now started to spread the play. Barry and Aza looked assertive, Chapo and Frostie grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck. Jimmy had 3 other opportunities to break the dead lock. These were chances that most would put large amounts of cash on to see a return. To everyone’s surprise, none of them produced a goal, maybe we put too much pressure on him, and expect too much at times? Andy Mee was also guilty of missing. Aza found space on the right crossed the ball to perfection finding Big Al, who has scored more with his head than his feet, to head wide. 5 chances, I was becoming low on mints and now Marlboro Lights, it is far worse standing on the sidelines than playing. The closest Girton Utd got was hitting the post from a delectable taken free kick from Frostie who had the keeper well beaten but for the ball only to hit the post. Were all these chances going to come back and bite us on the arse? The half time whistle came at the wrong time, the completely wrong time. This was now a chance for Foxton to regroup. If it were a boxing match, the referee would see it as a technical knockout…

Back in Oct 1974 Mohammed Ali came back off the ropes to defeat George Foreman in a scintillating fight. Not quite in the same prestigious way, Foxton came back to defeat Girton United. Once organised with continuity, it was all undone.

Foxton made a change, they entered Stuart Ogilvie into the arena, and this made a huge difference. He gathered the game, and slowed it down to the visiting teams advantage, involving more of his team-mates. The tide had turned. Girton United never got back into their stride. It was heartbreaking from the sideline, slowly but surely Girton United were losing grip. Foxton to their credit grinded out the result, and these results will give them promotion. They are an enigmatic team with two gracious people at the helm. Gone are the days of playing them and wondering whether you’ll be able to walk, talk or even move after a game, that’s going back some years…

Foxton struck the killer blow, a poor clearance found Matthew Hayden 20 yards out who hit the ball though several players into the corner of the net. You knew it was an important goal by the celebrations. The second soon followed. Simon Pawley the usually calmer of the two centre half’s, went to ground and upended Stuart Ogilvie, penalty! Galbo had no chance. Girton United tried, but it seems that they shot there bolt in spectacular fashion. The third and final goal came. Becoming stretched and untidy, Girton United were caught out leaving players unmarked in attack.

You can sense from the after match talk that players were gutted and dismayed but have vowed to come back stronger. We’ll call this a learning curve. This is a team that can and will deliver, maybe not today but pretty damn sure tomorrow.
